"You have transformed my life from the street child people thought I will become after my father's death, to someone whom people can count on. You have given an everlasting smile to my life."

» Street Children's Assistance Network of Nakuru (SCANN)
Nakuru, Kenya

SCANN is the "little miracle" of Kenya. It provides 150 former street boys with a healthy home and education from primary through post-secondary.

When SCANN's first university graduate announced that he had been hired by one of Kenya's leading telecommunications companies, there was jubilation throughout the SCANN Centre. All 150 younger students knew that the promise of a university education was truly a reality for all of them too. And the many others attending university or technical institutes were well aware that soon their futures would also be a testament to the loving care and guidance provided by the amazing Gilani family and their dedicated staff.

SCANN's commitment to alleviating the severe hardships faced by street children and rehabilitating them with the ultimate aim of seeing them grow into responsible, contributing members of society is rewarded every day with the successes and accomplishments of the young boys in their care.

SCANN is home to 150 boys, aged 3 to 20 years of age who are able to enjoy fine education, accommodation, food, clothing, counselling, healthcare and some of the most spectacular extracurricular activities on the planet. What a difference from their previous "homes" on the cold shop verandas, underneath kiosks and in gutters, wearing rags for warmth and sniffing glue to stave off hunger! As studying, acrobatics, martial arts and sports fill the SCANN complex with energy and laughter, the confidence and personal pride of these boys shines like a beam of light towards their bright futures.

CEDAR Foundation: International is perpetually humbled by the power that is SCANN.

Kakamega, Kenya

CEDAR Foundation Education Services (CFES) Kakamega is supporting 350 of Kenya's poorest girls through secondary school and on to colleges and universities. Every girl will graduate by 2014 in diverse areas of study such as medicine, engineering, education, tourism, law and communication.

Many say that the jewel in the crown of CEDAR Foundation: International is its amazing accomplishment in managing the funding, organization and logistics of its administratively complex programme aimed at seeing 350 of Kenya's poorest girls through secondary school and then on to university. In 2014, all of the girls will have completed their post-secondary studies and will be entering the adult world.

In this country, where human rights for females are virtually non-existent and where the socio-economic conditions limit most of the opportunities for personal growth generally, these 350 wonderfully capable young women will have seriously surpassed their society's expectations... and will be able to move into influential positions in their country. The multi-generational benefit of educating women in a country like Kenya is widely understood around the world. CEDAR's contribution in this area will be felt for untold years to come.

Credit for this success must go to these fine scholars who have had to adjust to social displacement, change in geography, distance from family and academic challenges for which many were ill-prepared. It has not been easy for them, but their own fortitude and realization that their personal change would affect many in the future, has allowed the transformative power of education to carry them through. There are no words to adequately describe the pride they bring to CEDAR Foundation: International.
