NKOSI'S Haven
NKOSI's Haven was founded in 1999 by Gail Johnson as a Center for HIV/AIDS infected mothers and their children. The inspiration for the Center arose from Gail's adoption of a small HIV-positive boy Nkosi after his mother died of AIDS. At a time when infected women and children were stigmatized and often destitute, Nkosis became a spokesperson for AIDS, speaking around the world about acceptance and the dire need for medical research. His dying wish was that children and their mothers be allowed to live together and cared for with love and respect.
Today, NKOSI's Haven is a care center providing cottages and facilities, medical attention and support for mothers and children in a normal, accepting, non-judgmental environment. All of the children are educated in the best local schools and given optimum support towards an independent lifestyle.
Now, with a comprehensive range of medical and social services, the once-destitute mothers and children of NKOSI'S Haven can live with dignity and a hopeful future.
